Therapy Intensives for Individuals

Contact us today to learn more!

Intensives for individuals

Have you invested in traditional talk therapy and realize that the sessions are just too short? They end right when you get to the good part! Or, maybe you have some emotional injuries that you know if you could just have some extended, focused time during one session, you could really uproot what's underlying your current feelings of distress, agony, and just overall lack of joy? Maybe your schedule just doesn't allow for you to attend weekly therapy but you can commit to several hours for one day or a few days.

We have just the solution! Therapy intensives deliver treatment in longer sessions over a shorter period of time. Best of all, we provide EMDR therapy for individual intensives, which is the gold standard treatment for trauma, which are any physical, emotional, or sexual injury that left your nervous system discombobulated and/or caused you to have a deeply felt sense that you are not worthy, capable, safe, and/or good enough. Intensives will help you get the healing you need and get back to joy and fulfillment in your life and relationships!

You might benefit from a Therapy Intensive if:

  • You have plateaued with progress in traditional therapy
  • You have identified some patterns that are hindering you from success
  • You've survived some horrific experiences that require extended time to process
  • You cannot commit to weekly therapy but have a block of time that you can dedicate to it
  • You are stuck and distressed and traditional talk therapy isn't helping

We provide in-person therapy in Atlanta (Buckhead) and Athens, GA and online therapy in Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Roswell, or anywhere in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, or Vermont.

Intensives Structure

Full Day Intensives

Pre-intensive Consultation Session

Pre-intensive consultation session before the intensive focuses on informed consent review, goal-setting, and grounding (approximately 75 minutes).

  • Review of informed consent and pre-assessments
  • Review of existing coping strategies and develop additional internal coping resources
  • Identify the intensive treatment targets for the intensive
  • Assignment of preparation tools to practice leading up to the intensive

Full Day Intensive

The day of the intensive includes approximately 6 hours of therapeutic work.

  • We will begin by visiting the coping resources previously developed.
  • Then, we will activate the trauma target and begin EMDR phase 4. We will continue this until we have reached 90 minutes into the session. We will contain the memory (~5 minutes) and then take a 15 minute break.
  • After 15 minutes, we will resume with reprocessing the target for 90 minutes. Then, we will contain it (~5 minutes) and take a lunch break for 60 minutes.
  • After lunch break, we will resume with reprocessing the target for 90 minutes. We will then contain (~5 minutes) and take a 15 minute break.
  • After fifteen minutes, we will resume with reprocessing the target for 50 minutes. We will then contain (~5 minutes) what’s left (if any) of the traumatic memory.
  • The last 20 minutes of the session will be discussing the progress of the session and clinician recommendations for further treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Intensives offered online?

Yes, you may do them in-person or virtually anywhere in California, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, or Vermont.

Are online Intensives as effective as in-person?

Yes, studies show that they are just as effective. You'll want to ensure you have privacy and a reliable internet connection.

May I use insurance to pay for Intensives?

No, insurance companies do not cover them.

I'm afraid Intensives will be too much emotionally for me. How do I know if they are right for me?

This is a great question. During the 15-minute consultation call, we will do a brief assessment to determine if intensives are safe for you. If so, during the initial 75 minute session, we will teach you internal coping strategies that will help you lower your anxiety when things become really distressing both during the intensive and outside of therapy. If during the intensive, you are flooded and it is way too much for you, we will help you get back to a place of relative emotional safety. We'll always be with you and will use our clinical expertise and judgment to keep you safe during the intensive.

Can I schedule Intensives on days other than Friday and Saturday?

Intensives are typically offered on Fridays and Saturdays. On occasion, I have other availability, but this is hard to come by.

What are some reasons Intensives may not be a good fit?

  • Untreated addiction
  • High levels of dissociation
  • Chronic and severe pain
  • Extreme insomnia
  • Inability to handle strong emotions for an extended time
  • Inability to stay present while feeling distressing emotions

I am in individual therapy already. Can I continue that and do Intensives?

Absolutely. I'm happy to work with your primary therapist to ensure continuum of care, with your written permission.
